Parish Walks

Mordiford and Dormington are typified by their surrounding hamlets, lanes, commons and woodland, and the hills and valleys arising from the many watercourses.  The Mordiford Loop Walk, the Wye Valley walk and smaller walks such as the Mordiford Dragon Trail , are rightly famous as they are so beautiful.  We have two maps (click here) that cover the Parishes and show each Public Right of Way (PROW), with its unique identifying number.  DR for Dormington and MF for Mordiford indicating to which parish the track belongs.  For example, DR1 is the footpath that runs from Claston Farm at the northernmost part of the parish, across to Western Beggard (WB1).

Herefordshire Council (in fact the Highway Authority) is legally responsible for recording and keeping PROW open; you can report defects and closures directly to them via their website; they are responsible for enforcement. Landowners

Most of our many footpaths and bridleways, are owned by private landowners, who must comply with legislation to keep paths clear and safe, and ditches and watercourses clear so they don’t cause flooding but neither does clearance damage fragile riparian ecosystems.

Countryside Code

The Countryside Code applies to those who walk and ride as well as to landowners.  Keeping gates closed, not dropping litter and not allowing ones  animals to foul fields is extremely important in our rural community.

Dogs

Harrying and worrying of livestock is become an increasing problem. Dogs are legally required to be kept under close control or on a lead, and not allowed to trespass across fields.  In addition, dog faeces are long-lived in the soil and pathogens cause blindness, disease and abortion in farm animals, and may also affect children and adults. So please stick and flick into a hedge, but better still, take it home for safe disposal in your domestic waste.  Where food is produced for the human food chain then paths may be closed (diverted) permanently or at certain time of the year.  Read or print out our Dog waste leaflet  and do contact us if there is a problem locally.

Footpaths Officer

Our Parish Council has been lucky to have excellent Footpaths Officers over the years. Although we keep a watchful eye on the paths, our Footpath Officer is always happy to be contacted if you spot problems or have concerns.  Please be our eyes and ears.  Spot the before and afters.
